- it reduces spasms in the smooth muscles

- combacts insomnia: significant sleep-inducer

Passion Flower has a lot of GABA, which is a substance in the brain that helps calm things down. GABA works in different parts of the brain and helps control excitability. When there's too much excitement, GABA steps in to relax things. Passion Flower can also help with problems like muscle cramps, seizures, anxiety, and trouble sleeping, which are linked to this excitability.

Passion Flower isn't just about GABA. It also has other helpful parts like flavonoids, harmala alkaloids, maltol, lycopene, and certain flavonoid glycosides. These extra parts, along with GABA, are responsible for the flower's calming, pain-relieving, and anxiety-reducing effects.

In a small study done with children and adolescents with ADHD, Passion Flower was found to be just as effective as the drug methylphenidate at controlling ADHD symptoms, however, methylphenidate was observed to cause side effects such as loss of appetite, anxiety, and nervousness. Passion Flower did not demonstrate these side effects in as much frequency, leading the researchers to suggest Passion Flower as a potential treatment for ADHD (Akhondzadeh, Mohammadi & Momeni, 2005).

Pregnancy safety data classifies the herb as Category B1, meaning there have been no increase in the frequency of malformations to the fetus, nor have there been increased frequency in other harmful effects on the fetus.
